Listed below are documents, regulations, and organizations used by Michigan State University in developing and maintaining the Animal Use & Care Program.

Guide for the Care & Use of Laboratory Animals ("the Guide")
MSU adheres to the Guide as published by the Commission on Life Sciences of the National Research Council (NRC).

Guide for the Care & Use of Agricultural Animals
MSU follows this guide for species not addressed in the NRC publication above.

United States Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research and Training
MSU utilizes these guidelines for appropriate animal use in a research and teaching setting.

NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW)
MSU holds an Assurance Statement on file with OLAW which describes the MSU program for animal use and care.

Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
This policy, made into law by the Health Research Extension Act of 1985, is applicable to all PHS-conducted or supported activities involving animals conducted in the United States, Puerto Rico, or any other US territory.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal & Plant Inspection Service (APHIS), Animal Care (AC)
MSU is registered with the USDA as a federally approved research facility.

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)
MSU utilizes the educational expertise of AALAS for progressive care and welfare training for MSU research staff and care providers.

Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee

Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animals
The colleges of Natural Science, Osteopathic Medicine, Human Medicine and Social Science were accrediated on November 18, 2003.
